We recently created a music video for Frenkie, one of the most popular Balkan rap artists. His latest song is called Gori (Burn) which talks about the decay of financial institutions & social discontent. The lyrics are provocative but very relevant in todays economic climate. “Wall Street is burning, the MMF is burning, each bank and each safe is burning. Burning, burning….Babylon is burning”. He also makes references to the Balkans, rapping to themes that resonate locally.

The real challenge in creating this music video was to capture the right mood and atmosphere – the track itself is quite enigmatic as it blends a laid-back regge beat (beat by Croatian hiphop producer Koolade) with socially provocative and explosive lyrics. So we blended two themes in the video, the verses telling a story, with the chorus capturing the energy and emotion of the lyrics. We shot the video over 3 days, using mainly natural light. The story arc of the video follows a worker who has lost his job and is doing whatever he can to survive – collecting junk and selling it at the market. He has watched his livelihood burn, his family burn, his future going up in flames. So we captured the emotion of this in the chorus and used the obvious symbol of fire (the track is called Burn after all!). The video premiered on MTV Adria on Monday night and so far has had a positive response. Stay tuned, there could be more music videos to come, as the Novagenus crew explores this new creative outlet.

Another filmed that grabbed my attention at the Festival was The Forgiveness of Blood, another insightful piece from the director of the wonderful Maria Full of Grace, Joshua Marston. Joshua is one of the ballsiest, committed and cerebral directors i have met, who is drawn to unique stories no matter where they are located. He decided to film a movie in Albania, using predominately non-actors and the film was entirely shot in Albanian. Amazing performance by the young lead actors who had no real acting experience. Sindi Lacej, the young 16 year old girl, is particularly good – she is mature beyond her years and incredibly articulate for a 16 year old. It’s been quite a journey for her – one moment she is a high school student in Albania, the next she is on the red carpet in Berlin and Sarajevo. Intriguingly, The Forgiveness of Blood has been put forward as Albania’s official entry for the Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film category but some Albanian film-makers are questioning its true Albanian credentials, due to the Director being born and bred in California. Marston must be feeling some déjà vu, as his previous film Maria Full fo Grace, was filmed and set in Colombia and was also put forward as the Colombian entry to the Oscars, only to be disqualified as not being “Colombian enough”. Let’s hope this film doesn’t meet the same fate, as it is truly an Albanian story.

And of course the climax to the Festival was the arrival of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Needless to say, the closing night was a very big night in Sarajevo. Angelina is in final post-production of her directoral debut film In the Land of Blood and Honey, starring the lovely Bosnian actress Zana Marjanović. She was awarded the honorary Heart of Sarajevo and she certainly is deserving. I have worked in refugee crisis zones around the world and raising public awareness is always a struggle, so i have always appreciated Angelina efforts. I had the pleasure of chatting with Angelina after the Awards. Not only is she just as gorgeous in person as on screen, she was charming, relaxed and without pretensions. She and Brad were surprisingly laid-back and accessible, chatting with everyone and they genuinely seemed to be enjoying their short time in Sarajevo so we hope to see them back at the Festival in the future.

All in all a great 2011 Festival and we look forward to next year – each year it seems to get better and better. Hope to see you there.

It was wonderful treat to meet and talk with Wim Wenders, the acclaimed director of films such as Paris,Texas and Wings of Desire. Being a big U2 fan, i have followed his career in part because of his close affinity to U2. But Wim is a unique & uncompromising artist and his latest project is a beautiful and poignant tribute to his close friend dancer/choreographer Pina Bausch. Wim tells the story of how Pina for years was asking him to film and document her dance company but he never felt the current state of film tools at his disposal could do it justice. Then he saw the concert film U2-3D and he realized what had been missing was the extra dimension. So he threw himself into learning everything he could about 3D filming in order to create a masterpiece. Tragically, Pina died 2 days before filming was planned to start. So after mourning her loss Wim decided to re-imagine the film he was going to make and create a tribute to her that captured her true genius. I would never consider myself a fan of dance, but there are scenes in the film Pina that simply take your breath away – and move you to tears. It does come across as a deeply personal film – a film that celebrates her life and art by her friends and collaborators. But it is a cinematic achievement that is definitely worth seeing, though the film is unlikely to see wide release.

Got to see the film Cairo 678, which was the directoral debut of Egyptian screenwriter Mohamed Diab. The film was fortuitously released just prior to the Egyptian demonstrations, so it has ridden the wave of interest in this part of the world. The film is a blunt portrayal of sexual harassment of women in Egypt and follows the intertwining stories of three women who are all subjected to different forms of sexual harassment. Diab deftly directs the story and deliberately avoids black and white characterizations, preferring to paint in shades of grey and ambiguity, leaving the audience to make their own judgements and conclusions. It is superbly acted and is well worth seeing. As a well established Egyptian screenwriter he had to fight to be allowed to direct the film – the film’s financiers wanted to entrust the film to an experienced Director. But Diab fought and finally got to stretch his legs in directing and he encourages all aspiring film-makers just to make the leap to do it. Diab is a young and refreshing Egyptian film-maker who is full of optimism for the “new” Egypt and i am looking forward to what he will do next.

Once again, i had to chance to chat with Terry George, Irish film-maker/screenwriter and all round interesting guy. I have an affinity with Terry George’s work, as he directed the brillant film Hotel Rwanda with Don Cheadle. As i was working as an aid worker in Rwanda in 1994, the film had a strong personal connection for me so i was delighted when i finally got to meet him in Sarajevo a number of years ago. He is a long time friend of the Film Festival. He was also screenwriter and assistant director on In the Name of the Father with Daniel Day Lewis, another one of my favorite films. The Sarajevo Film Festival tends to attract film-makers who have a strong social voice and a strong social commitment

Even the unseasonably rainy weather couldn’t dampen the atmosphere of the 2011 Sarajevo Film Festival. As always, it was a wonderful week of interesting films, talented & fascinating film-makers great parties. It really is a film festival for lovers of film. So as in previous years, Novagenus was responsible for trying to capture the highlights of the festival through video. We also filmed interviews with film-makers and actors, which is always fun. This year in the Competition Programme there was seemed to be an emphasis placed on first-time film-makers – seven of the eight films in Competition were debut feature films by the Directors, which shows Sarajevo is really trying to walk the talk and support new film-makers from the region.

Winner of the Heart of Sarajevo for best film was the Austrian production called Breathing – a wonderfully mature directorial debut by well known Austrian stage and film actor Karl Markovics. He has made the transition from actor to director look easy. Breathing is a film about an adolescent who was accidentally kills a another young child and thus spends his youth in juvenile detention. Markovics shows a lot of restraint in telling the story, allowing just fragments of the boys past to seep through the audience. Less is more for Markovics and it works. But undoubtedly his brave decision to cast an unknown non-actor to the lead roll paid off in spades, as the young Thomas Schubert owns the screen in a performance of restraint and concealed anguish that perfectly sets the tone for the film. Schubert told me he had never acted before and he only went along to the audition to accompany a friend – but Markovics obviously saw something special in Shubert and asked him to audition. The rest, as they say, is history. He won the Heart of Sarajevo for Best Actor and the highlight of the Festival for me was seeing this young guy receive the award on stage from Angelina Jolie. Wow, how does a 17 year old top that?
